The Galaxy-Class is an Exploration Cruiser. First launched in 2357 but seeing a major refit program in the 25th century, several vessels of the class continue to serve in Starfleet.

History[]

The Galaxy-class began development in the year 2343 and with the prototype USS Galaxy finally launching in 2357 and its first two sister ships the ever-famous Federation flagship USS Enterprise-D and USS Yamato following in the next few years. The original design run was for six vessels and a spare six space-frames.

Intended to be the start of a major exploration program, events in Federation history conspired against the class. The Battle of Wolf 359 saw the destruction of over 30 Starfleet ships and then the commencement of the Dominion War necessitated the reactivation of large numbers of Starfleet reserve vessels. The Galaxy-Class was too large and complicated to construct quickly and also not designed for combat situations, so few were constructed in the period and those that were performed poorly. By 2371, three vessels of the class had been lost in service.

The Galaxy class was refitted at the turn of the 25th century, after the collapse of the Khitomer Accords in 2399. In response to increased hostility with the Klingons, the newly redesigned ship was equipped with a phaser spinal lance, additional phaser arrays and a third engine nacelle assembly to allow for longer duration at maximum warp.

Appearance[]

The design included two hull sections: a saucer-shaped primary hull, and a detachable secondary hull which housed the ship's primary engines. They could be reversibly separated, and were both equipped with independent flight and combat capabilities. Generally, civilians and non-essential personnel would evacuate to the saucer module, while the senior staff confronted a threat in the battle section, which contained the majority of weapons systems.

Following the refit, the Galaxy-class was given a third warp nacelle giving it a silhouette usually associated with Federation Dreadnoughts.

Capabilities[]

Galaxy-class craft are designed to operate for years at a time away from Starfleet bases and thusly are highly independent craft featuring the best technology of the 2350s with regular updates to keep the ship competent - in particular, the spinal phaser lance to give it a 25th century weapon capability.

The Warp Drive has a sustainable speed of Warp 6 with special warp geometry considerations minimising damage to subspace & the ship caused by high speeds.
